Early Life, Family and Training
Born on July 30, 1863, in Steinach am Brenner, Andreas Strickner emerged from a family of Tyrolean artists, though his immediate path was shaped by more practical hands. He was the son of a master carpenter, a background that grounded his early years in the tactile realities of craftsmanship. It was not in the workshop, however, that his true direction became clear. During his period of military service, Strickner discovered a latent artistic talent, a realization that would eventually pull him away from the trade of his father and toward the formal study of painting.
This discovery prompted a disciplined pursuit of artistic education. He first sought instruction at the Staatsgewerbeschule in Innsbruck, where he began to refine the instincts identified during his service. His development continued as he moved toward more rigorous academic training, eventually arriving in Munich. In 1889, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, studying under Johann Leonhard Raab. This period of intense study provided the technical foundation for a career that would eventually see him become a central figure in the religious art of Upper Austria.
Artistic Career and Style
Following his studies in Munich, Strickner moved to Upper Austria, establishing an atelier in Urfahr in 1898. This transition marked the beginning of a prolific period in which he became perhaps the most sought-after church painter in the region during the early 20th century. His professional life was defined by a steady stream of ecclesiastical commissions, where he focused his efforts on the creation of large-scale wall and ceiling paintings, as well as formal altar pieces.
His aesthetic was rooted in the Neo-Baroque, a choice that reflected a deep reverence for the visual traditions of the past. Rather than seeking a modern departure, his brushwork and compositions were clearly oriented toward the 18th-century Austrian works that preceded him. This stylistic continuity allowed him to integrate his new creations into the existing architectural fabric of the churches he served. His work was characterized by this deliberate connection to historical Austrian art, favoring a sense of continuity over radical innovation.
As the decades progressed, his focus shifted from the creation of new imagery toward the preservation of existing works. From the late 1920s onward, he became increasingly occupied with the work of a restorer. This later phase of his career required a different kind of technical precision, moving from the expansive gestures of ceiling frescoes to the delicate, meticulous demands of conservation.
Major Commissions and Works
Strickner’s career was defined by a prolific output of ecclesiastical art, particularly within the churches of Upper Austria. His early professional engagements included the creation of ceiling frescoes for the Parish Church Reichenthal in 1894, followed by an extensive period of work for the Parish Church Neumarkt im Hausruckkreis between 1895 and 1897. By the turn of the century, his presence in the region was firmly established. In 1912, he provided the Familienkirche in Linz with a series of ceiling paintings, altar panels, and the Stations of the Cross. This period of high activity continued as he moved toward more complex architectural spaces, such as the frescoes he executed in the chapter hall of Stift Lambach in 1916.
The years following the Great War saw Strickner undertaking significant liturgical commissions. He completed the high altar painting of St. Ulrich for the Parish Church Ulrichsberg in 1918, and by 1919, he was executing vault paintings for the Parish Church Niederthalheim. His hand was also visible in the interior of the Parish Church St. Magdalena in Linz, where he painted the walls in 1924. Even as his focus shifted toward restoration in his later years, his decorative hand remained active; he completed ceiling paintings for the Parish Church Kollerschlag in 1930, marking one of his final major contributions to the sacred spaces of the region.
