Early Life, Family and Training

André Gagey entered the world in 1888 in Châteaudun, Eure-et-Loir. He was born into a family where structure and design were part of the daily landscape, as his father, Auguste Gagey, worked as an architect. His mother, Henriette Pierre, provided the other half of his early domestic life. This upbringing in a household shaped by architectural precision likely influenced the way he would eventually perceive the world through his brush.

His path toward becoming a painter began quite early. By 1904, he was already showing his work at the Salon, a significant step for a young man finding his footing in the French art scene. His formal education was shaped by the guidance of established hands. He studied under Charles Laisné, a teacher who helped him develop his foundational skills. Later, his training continued under the painter Lucien Callé, whose influence helped refine his approach to the canvas.

Military Service and Career Highlights

The course of Gagey's life was interrupted by the onset of the First World War. He served in the 131e régiment d'infanterie, facing the harsh realities of the front lines. On September 9, 1914, he was wounded in his right leg, an injury that would stay with him. For his service and bravery during the conflict, he was decorated with the Croix de guerre avec étoile de bronze.

Following the war, his focus returned to the competitive world of French art. He sought to test his skills against the best of his generation, competing for the prestigious Prix de Rome in both 1921 and 1922. This period marked a significant rise in his professional standing. In 1921, he was able to exhibit his work at the Paris Salon, and by 1930, his technical skill was recognized with a gold medal.

Exhibitions and State Recognition

Gagey’s presence in the Parisian art scene grew steadily as he established himself as a painter of landscapes, figures, and genre scenes. His ability to capture the quiet details of daily life and the natural world led to significant opportunities for public display. By 1921, his work was being presented at the Paris Salon, a major milestone for any artist of his era. His dedication to his craft was further recognized in 1930, when he was honored with a gold medal.

A notable moment in his professional life occurred in 1926, when a dedicated exhibition of his canvases was opened at 152 Boulevard Haussmann. This event brought his work into the direct view of the French state. The importance of his art was confirmed when the State acquired one of his pieces from this specific exhibition, ensuring his paintings would be preserved within public collections.

Later Years and Death

In 1924, André Gagey married Odette Amélie Marie Roger. This period of his life followed years of significant professional activity and the personal challenges brought about by his military service. He continued to live and work through the middle of the twentieth century, maintaining his presence in the French art scene.

The artist eventually passed away in Clichy la Garenne. He died in 1964 at the age of 76. His life spanned much of the modern era, from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century.
