The Life and Career of Wu Bing
Wu Bing was a native of Piling. His presence in the historical record is most felt during the Southern Song dynasty, specifically between 1190 and 1194. During the Shaoxi reign, his brushwork brought him into the inner circles of the court in Hangzhou. He held the position of painter-in-attendance, a role that placed his work directly within the imperial sphere.
His standing at court was marked by the favor of Empress Li. This connection allowed him to work within the formal structures of the Hangzhou court during those brief, active years. He moved through the halls of power during a specific window of time, leaving behind traces of his hand in the silk and ink of the era.
Key Works and Style
Wu Bing’s hand is most clearly seen in the delicate details of his ink on silk works. In his painting Bamboo and Insects, the focus rests on the small, fleeting movements of nature. A dragonfly hovers near a stalk of bamboo, its presence captured in a moment of stillness. Nearby, a bush cricket perches upon a leaf, while a flying wasp moves through the space. These small creatures inhabit a scene where the yellowing tips of the leaves suggest the transition into late summer or early autumn.
The work is composed as an album leaf and a fan painting, measuring 24.8 x 26.8 cm (9 3/4 x 10 9/16 in.). There is a quiet precision in how the insects interact with the bamboo. The composition relies on these specific, minute observations of the natural world. Each element, from the insect's position to the color of the foliage, points toward a specific season of change.
Exhibitions and Museum Collections
The ink on silk from the late 1100s, specifically the work titled Bamboo and Insects, finds its home in the Cleveland Museum of Art. This piece, an album leaf and fan painting, has traveled to several institutions to be seen by others. In 1980, it was part of a display at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Later, in 1982, it was shown at the Tokyo National Museum.
The painting has also been included in the exhibition Eight Dynasties of Chinese Painting, which was held between 1981 and 2023. This long-running exhibition allowed the work to be viewed alongside other pieces from different eras. The physical presence of the work remains in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it was gifted by Mrs. A. Dean Perry.
