A Life in Color and Portraiture

Born in Nakło nad Notecią, West Prussia, William Raphael was a painter, photographer, and professor who became a foundational figure in the professional art practice of Canada. After receiving formal training at the Berlin School of Fine Art under Johann Eduard Wolff and Karl Begas, he emigrated to New York City and eventually settled in Montreal. His early career involved working at photographic firms, where his skill in painting portraits led to a collaboration with photographer William Notman, producing refined painted photographic portraits for prominent members of Montreal society.

Raphael's diverse body of work encompassed portraits, still lifes, genre scenes, and landscapes. He was particularly noted for his lively depictions of the Montreal harbour and market life. His artistic range extended to flora and fauna, religious scenes, and anatomical drawings for medical publications. He also served as an art restorer and a teacher at various institutions, including the High School of Montreal and the Art Association of Montreal.

Institutional Legacy and Artistic Contributions

As a central figure in the nineteenth-century Canadian artistic landscape, Raphael held several prestigious memberships and leadership roles. He was a charter member of the Society of Canadian Artists in Montreal and the Canadian Academy of Arts in 1880. His influence extended through his membership in the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He also exhibited his work internationally, including at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and the Royal Society of British Artists.

His notable works are held in several significant public collections, including:

One of his recognized paintings, Immigrants at Montreal (later titled Behind Bonsecours Market), features the artist himself portrayed within the crowd. His legacy is characterized by his role in opening new creative pathways for future generations of artists.
