The Vision of a Conceptual Realist
Born in Hillegom, Netherlands, Rob Møhlmann is a Dutch artist, poet, and writer of art books. While he initially explored drawing through comics and landscapes, he eventually devoted himself to still life painting. As an autodidact, he developed a unique approach to the genre, often focusing on the themes of dilapidation and decay. His work is characterized by a precise, virtuoso expression of surface matter and an intense observation of detail. Møhlmann is often classified as a conceptual realist, a term reflecting his ability to imbue everyday objects with a sense of intensity and meaning through his specific method of observation.
His technical evolution led to the development of the falcon-perspective, a method he calls "praying above the image." This involves observing a subject perpendicularly from above, creating a "top-down painting" where the vanishing point is at the center of the earth rather than on the horizon. This unique vantage point allows him to record subjects with a sense of depth and presence that transcends standard perspectives.
Major Series and Artistic Contributions
Møhlmann's career is marked by several significant series that explore the relationship between objects and reality. His Canto Collection, created between 1982 and 1993, serves as a pictorial adventure consisting of 124 paintings. In this series, a single tin can of the fictitious brand Canto is depicted at the same size and angle in every work, while the surrounding environment changes. Other notable projects include:
- The Balance Series, featuring increasingly complex stackings of objects on a canvas.
- The Framed Series, where he painted scenes captured within a randomly placed frame.
- The Damaged or Destroyed Canvasses, which create the illusion of a torn surface.
Beyond his personal painting, Møhlmann has been a staunch advocate for figurative art. He established Museum Møhlmann to house art that represents something and to provide a platform for figurative expression. His contributions to the art world have been recognized with several honors, including being named Damster of the Year in 2014 and receiving the Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2017.
