The Artistic Evolution of Olav Maran
Born in Tartu, Olav Maran is an Estonian artist who began his formal training at the Estonian Academy of Arts. After receiving a master's degree in graphic arts in 1959, he spent several years working as a designer and caricaturist for the journal Pikker. His early career was marked by an interest in modern art movements, leading him to execute abstract paintings and his first surrealistic work, Prospect, in 1959. During the 1960s, Maran experimented with various modern styles, utilizing oil painting as his primary medium alongside gouache, tempera, pastel, and collage.
His early exhibitions often featured simplified-form townscapes and still life paintings. During a period living near a paper mill, he captured the surrounding neighborhood through "Severe Style" paintings, such as Autumn Sun and Winter Townscape, which reflected a certain gloominess and bleakness. Other notable works from this era include Moon over Roofs and Over the Fence.
Later Styles and Subject Matter
Following a religious turn in 1968, Maran's artistic focus shifted toward depicting realistic landscapes, flowers, and still lifes in the style of old masters. His compositions often featured amaryllises, lilies, and peonies, imbuing ordinary objects with inner harmony. In his later career, he continued to paint townscapes, including Winter Suburb Motif and Dull Winter Day. While his portraits primarily concentrated on form and color, his 1981 work Graphic Artist Sylvia Liiberg remains a notable piece from his repertoire.
