The Quiet Observer of the Landscape
Born on July 10, 1955, in Bukovce, within the Bardejov district, Jozef Jackanič has spent much of his life looking closely at the world around him. His path as a painter began with formal training at the Secondary School of Art and Design in Košice. This foundation led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he focused his studies on the nuances of landscape and the human figure. He studied under professor F. Jiroudka, absorbing the technical demands of capturing light and form. After his time in Prague, he returned to Vranov nad Topľou, a place of his youth, where he continues to live and work today.
His practice is rooted in the physical reality of his surroundings. There is a sense of place in his work that comes from a long-standing connection to the Slovak landscape. He does not merely depict scenery; he records the specific atmosphere of a season or the weight of a particular light. His presence in the art community is also felt through his role as a teacher at the Department of Music and Art Education, Faculty of Education, University of Prešov, where he passes on these technical observations to the next generation.
Works and Collections
The physical traces of his career are held in several significant regional institutions. His paintings are not merely personal expressions but are part of the documented visual history of the area. His work can be found in the following collections:
- Vychodoslovenské Galéria, Košice
- Šariš Gallery, Prešov
His output during the late 1980s shows a focus on the changing qualities of light and the passage of time. In 1987, he produced Winter at Michalku, a work now held in the Šariš Gallery, Prešov. By 1988, his focus shifted toward the subtle transitions of light and season, resulting in Half-light and Jasenov Autumn, both of which are part of the Vychodoslovenské Galéria, Košice collection.
A Focus on Form and Light
The brushwork in Jackanič's paintings often deals with the intersection of the natural world and human presence. His later works, such as those from the early 1990s and early 2000s, continue this investigation. In 1992, he painted Korytári I, and by 1989, he had completed Poslední korytári I. These pieces suggest a preoccupation with specific figures and the environments they inhabit. His 2001 work, Vlkolinec I, remains a part of his ongoing dialogue with the landscape. He works with a precision that respects the subject, whether it is the starkness of a winter scene or the shifting colors of an autumn forest.
