The Life and Artistic Evolution of Joan Castejón
Born in Elche, Spain, Joan Castejón is a painter, sculptor, and draftsman whose career has been marked by significant personal and political experiences. After moving to Valencia at sixteen to train at the Academy of San Carlos, his early work between 1964 and 1967 was characterized by a neofigurative style, where human figures appeared within undefined spaces. This period was defined by a tense correctness of line and vigorous anatomic effects. His trajectory was interrupted in 1967 when he was arrested during demonstrations in Valencia and subsequently sentenced to prison by a court-martial. During his time in the prisons of Valencia, Teruel, and the Canary Islands, he continued to create, producing two thousand drawings using wax or pencil.
Following his release, Castejón became a member of the Grup d'Elx and eventually settled in Dénia in 1974. His stylistic approach evolved through several distinct phases: an explicit and shocking expressionism in the late 1970s, a brighter abstraction inspired by the landscape in the 1980s, and a theatrical, virtuoso drawing style in the 1990s. Throughout his career, the human being has remained his central reference, often depicted as a heroic figure subjected to struggle. His work has been exhibited in numerous institutions, including the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Elche.
