The Life and Vision of Alberto Greco
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alberto Greco was a central figure in the development of conceptual art across Argentina, Brazil, and Spain. He was a student of Tomás Maldonado and attended workshops led by Cecilia Marcouch, though he eventually left the School of Fine Arts. His artistic journey was marked by a desire for personal and artistic growth, often expressed through a rebellious nature that challenged societal norms. Greco’s work was deeply tied to the concept of Informalism, an approach that explored the possibilities of gesture, materialism, and signage to grant viewers the freedom to decide what they see.
Greco’s practice was characterized by a fascination with the quotidian reality of everyday life. He sought to redefine art by moving away from formalizing and institutionalizing tendencies, believing that art is an act of discovery and a process of looking. This philosophy was most evident in his Vivo Dito project, a series created in 1962. Through this work, he aimed to teach people to find beauty in ordinary objects, asserting that art exists all around us and should not be confined to the traditional boundaries of a canvas.
The Vivo Dito Series and Artistic Expressions
The Vivo Dito project, meaning "living finger," focused on the idea of living in the present moment. During this period, Greco would walk through towns to sign objects, people, or animals, treating them as living art pieces within their natural environments. His methods were often unorthodox; he would draw circles on the ground and sign his name outside of them, or hang manifestos, such as the Gran Manifiesto-Rollo Arte Vivo Dito, around a town. He believed that once an object was found, it should live in its place rather than being moved to an art gallery.
Greco’s experimental nature extended to various forms of expression and provocative performances. His exhibitions included unconventional works, such as 30 Mice From Neo-Figuration, which featured mice inside a glass box. He also engaged in political and social commentary through his Sin Titulo series and works like Christ 63. Beyond visual art, Greco was a poet who published his first book in 1950, and he also explored the creation of jewelry.
