From the tender age of thirteen, he worked as a collier, an experience that would later become the very heartbeat of his creative output. His journey from the pits to the palette began in 1911 through part-time classes at the Swansea School of Art. This initial spark of creativity eventually led him away from the local pits and toward a formal education that would shape his technical mastery. After a decade of working underground, Evans pursued his studies more deeply, eventually winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. His oeuvre is characterized by a powerful depiction of the human condition, particularly through his focus on the coal miners of South Wales.
