Sarah Cain: An Exploration of Embodied Abstraction

Sarah Cain (b. 1979, Albany, New York) is an American contemporary artist whose practice defies categorization, prioritizing intuitive exploration and responding directly to the environment—a philosophy that informs her distinctive approach to abstract painting and installation art. Born in upstate New York, Cain’s formative years were marked by a fascination with music and performance, experiences which would later permeate her artistic vision. Moving to California in 1997 to pursue her passion for visual arts at San Francisco Art Institute—where she earned her BFA in 2001—she honed her skills and embarked on a journey of artistic discovery that culminated in an MFA from UC Berkeley in 2006, followed by a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

• Early Influences: Cain’s artistic sensibilities were shaped by exposure to diverse musical genres—particularly experimental music and jazz—and by her engagement with performance art traditions. These influences instilled in her a commitment to spontaneity, improvisation, and a willingness to embrace unexpected materials and processes.
• Formal Training & Artistic Development: Her MFA program at Berkeley provided invaluable grounding in studio practice and critical theory, fostering her ability to articulate complex ideas through visual language. Notably, Cain’s participation in the Skowhegan residency solidified her dedication to site-responsive artmaking—creating artworks that engage actively with their surroundings.

The Language of Embodied Abstraction

Cain distinguishes herself from conventional modernist abstraction by prioritizing emotional resonance and physicality. Rejecting sterile formalism, she seeks to translate inner experience into visual form, utilizing a rich palette of colors—often juxtaposed in surprising combinations—to convey moods and sensations. Her canvases are characterized by dynamic curves and bold hues that generate palpable energy and joyful chaos, mirroring the rhythms and textures of musical compositions. Cain’s method involves layering pigments onto stretcher bars with meticulous care, resulting in textured surfaces that invite tactile engagement and contribute to the artwork's immersive quality.

• Material Exploration: Cain’s artistic process transcends traditional painting mediums, incorporating unconventional artifacts such as musical instruments, fabric scraps, sand grains, feathers, jewelry pieces, and ribbons—elements she meticulously arranges within her installations to create environments that stimulate sensory perception.
• Site-Responsive Artmaking: Cain's commitment to responding directly to the environment is evident in projects like “Sarah Cain” at SFMOMA and “Day after day on this beautiful stage,” where she transforms architectural spaces into immersive experiences—a deliberate departure from the confines of the easel canvas.
