The Drawing Year Alumni, 2013. Justine King gained a first-class degree in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art in 2012. She has since exhibited at The Royal Scottish Academy where she was awarded for her series of drawing, and now lives and works in London. King is concerned with the idea of transformation and alchemy in relation to her materials with a great interest in a time where art and the sciences connected. She creates large, time-induced, intricate drawings using controlled tonal shifts that lure viewers closer to the surface, revealing her process of creating a cumulative drawing. Her work incorporates practice-based research into new ways of combining materials through sourcing and creating her own colour palette.

Om kunstneren

A Rising Voice in Contemporary Art: The Journey of Justine King

Justine King, a British artist born in London in 1988, embodies the spirit of a new generation—one that seamlessly blends traditional artistic skills with a distinctly modern sensibility. Her work, primarily focused on drawing and painting, has already garnered recognition within the art world, notably through exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the Royal Scottish Academy. However, King’s creative output extends far beyond the canvas; she is also a compelling journalist and digital storyteller under the moniker Beau of the Fifth Column, offering insightful commentary on United States politics via YouTube. This duality—the introspective world of visual art alongside the dynamic realm of current affairs—defines her unique perspective and informs the depth of her artistic expression.

Early Life and Artistic Foundations

King’s formative years were marked by a fascinating cultural blend. Though born in Australia, she spent much of her childhood immersed in the vibrant environment of China, attending international schools where art became an early refuge and passion. This upbringing instilled in her a global outlook and a keen observational eye. From kindergarten doodles to dedicated art classes, King’s natural talent was nurtured, fueled by encouragement from family and peers. Her father's dedication to literature sparked frequent visits to bookstores, exposing her to comics and anime magazines—influences that would later shape her aesthetic sensibilities. The support of her brother in discovering seminal works like *Evangelion* and *Katekyo Hitman*, alongside the broader cultural embrace of animation in Asia, laid a strong foundation for her artistic journey. This early exposure wasn’t merely about entertainment; it was an immersion into visual storytelling, character design, and narrative structure—elements that continue to resonate within her work today.

Formal Training and Emerging Style

King's commitment to art led her to Edinburgh College of Art, where she earned a first-class degree in Drawing and Painting in 2012. This period was pivotal in honing her technical skills and developing a distinctive artistic voice. While details regarding the specific themes explored during her academic years remain somewhat limited, it’s clear that her training provided a solid grounding in traditional techniques. Her work is characterized by a delicate balance between realism and abstraction, often employing subtle color palettes and evocative linework to create emotionally resonant imagery. The influence of artists like Satoshi Kon, Yuasa Masaaki, Alexandre Diboine, and Hirokazu Koreeda—known for their experimental yet accessible styles—is evident in her willingness to push boundaries while maintaining a strong narrative core.

Beyond the Canvas: Journalism and Digital Storytelling

What sets King apart is her multifaceted approach to creativity. As Beau of the Fifth Column on YouTube, she provides incisive analysis of United States politics, demonstrating a remarkable ability to dissect complex issues with clarity and nuance. This foray into journalism isn’t a departure from her artistic practice but rather an extension of it—a different medium for exploring themes of power, identity, and social commentary. The skills honed as a visual artist—observation, composition, storytelling—translate seamlessly into her journalistic work, allowing her to present information in a compelling and engaging manner. This unique combination has garnered a dedicated following and established her as a respected voice in online political discourse.

Recent Achievements and Future Trajectory

The culmination of King’s diverse talents was recently recognized with the 2024 Annie Award for Best Student Film, awarded for her work *The Little Poet*. This achievement underscores her potential as a filmmaker and further solidifies her position as a rising star in the creative landscape. While her body of work is still relatively emerging, the combination of artistic skill, intellectual curiosity, and digital fluency suggests a promising future. King’s ability to navigate between different disciplines—art, journalism, filmmaking—positions her uniquely to address contemporary issues with both emotional depth and analytical rigor. Her historical significance lies not just in her individual artwork but also in her embodiment of a new generation of artists who are unafraid to challenge boundaries and embrace interdisciplinary approaches to creative expression.
