This humble beginning would profoundly shape his artistic vision – a deep connection to the land and its people, interwoven with a restless spirit seeking new forms of expression. His early years were marked by the hardships of rural life, experiences that instilled in him a keen awareness of human emotion and the beauty found within simplicity. He began drawing at a young age, capturing the essence of his surroundings – the weathered faces of farmers, the golden fields under the Ukrainian sun, and the quiet dignity of village life. These formative sketches laid the groundwork for his later exploration of color and form.

He employed a distinctive technique – often utilizing colored linocut – that produced striking images with rich textures and bold outlines. These illustrations weren’t mere decorations; they were integral parts of the stories themselves, adding layers of meaning and emotional resonance. His book covers became instantly recognizable, reflecting both the spirit of the text and Havrylenko's own artistic sensibilities.
