A Life Between Alsace and Ireland

Born in Bernwiller, France, Louis Werner was the son of a prosperous farming family. His early artistic inclinations were shared with his neighbor, Jean-Jacques Henner, as they painted scenes upon the buildings of their commune. His formal training began at the age of fifteen at the college of Altkirch under Charles Goutzwiller, followed by studies in Strasbourg with Gabriel Guérin. Werner’s talent was recognized early, as Guérin declared his training complete by 1842. During this period, he produced numerous portraits of ecclesiastics and collaborated with his master on the astronomical clock of the Strasbourg Cathedral.

After moving to Paris, Werner studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, receiving instruction from notable figures such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Horace Vernet, and Paul Delaroche. He also studied sculpture under Pierre-Jean David d'Angers and James Pradier. Following a brief period in Paris, he returned to Strasbourg around 1850, where he worked alongside Jean Oster and moved within the social circles of the Schwilgué and Schützenberger families.

Portraiture and the Irish Aristocracy

In 1853, Werner made his first trip to London, though he eventually found his lasting professional home in Ireland. After meeting his future wife in Rathfarnham, he settled in the Dublin region, officially establishing himself there in 1861. As a prominent portraitist, he became a favored artist for the Irish aristocracy, painting significant figures such as James Butler, George Brown, and Francis Blackburne. His reputation grew throughout the following decade, and he frequently exhibited his work at the Royal Hibernian Academy.

While his early career featured religious works—including portraits of Saint Margaret, Saint Valentine, and Saint Thérèse—his output in Ireland shifted primarily toward secular portraiture to meet the demands of his Protestant clientele. To manage a heavy workload that reached nearly a hundred commissions per year, his wife established a photography studio in 1864. Although the studio bore his name, it was operated entirely by his wife. Werner continued to paint until his death in Dublin.
