A Life of Artistic Patronage and Theater
Louis Martinet was a French painter, gallery owner, art dealer, and theater director. After studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Baron Gros, he was forced to abandon his career as a painter due to an eye disease. His professional journey shifted toward the administration of the fine arts, where he served as an inspector in charge of organizing the Salons until 1855. Following a resignation in 1857, he became an artistic agent for major collectors, such as the Duke of Morny.
Martinet was deeply involved in the Parisian art scene, organizing exhibitions and founding the weekly magazine Le Courrier Artistique. He co-founded the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts to support artists' independence and copyright. His gallery, the Gallery Martinet, became a significant venue, hosting works by artists such as Jean-François Millet, Gustave Courbet, and Honoré Daumier, and notably providing Édouard Manet with his first personal exhibition in 1863.
Theatrical Ventures and Musical Fusion
Beyond the visual arts, Martinet was a dedicated theater director. He managed the Théâtre des Fantaisies-Parisiennes and later directed the Théâtre Lyrique. Following a fire at the Place du Châtelet, he moved his company to the Théâtre de l'Athénée. His career also included a period as the director of the Opéra Populaire at the Théâtre de la Gaîté. His gallery was known for its attempt at a total artistic experience, incorporating a concert room that hosted recitals and music by composers such as Hector Berlioz and Camille Saint-Saëns.
