The Sculptural and Painted Form
Born in 1907, Kurt Sohns moved through the twentieth century as a practitioner of both sculpture and painting. His creative output was marked by a presence in the German art scene, spanning several decades from the late 1930s until the turn of the new millennium. His work was not confined to a single medium, as he navigated the tactile demands of three-dimensional form alongside the two-dimensional possibilities of the canvas.
His professional life was defined by a steady engagement with the exhibition circuit. Between 1939 and 2002, he participated in sixteen exhibitions, a record that included both solo presentations and group shows. These appearances took him across several German cities, establishing a footprint in cultural centers such as Hannover, München, Hamburg, Berlin, and Essen.
Exhibition and Presence
The trajectory of his career saw him moving through various venues, from specialized galleries to larger institutional settings. His solo exhibitions were held in notable locations, including Galerie Artforum in Hannover and the Württembergischer Kunstverein - WKV in Stuttgart. These individual shows allowed for a concentrated view of his development, offering a moment to observe his evolution as a sculptor and painter.
His involvement in group exhibitions placed his work alongside the broader currents of his time. He exhibited at the Haus der Kunst in München and the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, contributing to the collective dialogue of the era. This history of showing suggests a life spent in active conversation with the artistic community of Germany.
