A Life Rooted in Brest
The salt air of Brest defines the beginning and the end of Félix Barret. Born on 31 August 1807 to a naval officer, his early years are anchored in the Recouvrance district. He moves from the maritime atmosphere of his childhood toward the academic rigor of Paris. There, he enters the studio of François Gérard at the École des Beaux-Arts. This training provides the technical foundation for a career that oscillates between the grand halls of the Salon de Paris and the quiet classrooms of Quimper.
Between 1846 and 1866, Barret finds a different rhythm in Quimper. He serves as a drawing professor at the local college. This period marks a shift from the pursuit of exhibition glory to a settled, instructional life. His presence in the region is steady. He remains a figure of the local landscape, deeply connected to the Breton identity through both his residence and his subject matter.
The Canvas and the Copperplate
Barret’s work captures the specificities of Breton life. In 1845, he produces Le pardon de Kérinou, an oil on canvas that finds its home in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest. His brush also turns toward portraiture, seen in the Portrait présumé de Madame de Kergariou from 1839 and his depiction of Joseph-René Bellot. These works reflect a mastery of form developed under Gérard.
Beyond oil painting, Barret engages with the medium of engraving to document the everyday. His engravings for the book Le Finistère en 1836 offer glimpses into the lives of peasants and villagers. Notable pieces include:
- Hospitalité bretonne: An engraving capturing local customs.
- Petite paysanne des environs de Brest: A study of the rural population near his home.
He also demonstrates a capacity for replication and devotion, such as his copy of La donation du Rosaire by François Valentin. This work resides in the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Kergoat. His output remains a record of the people and the religious traditions of the Finistère region.
