The Life and Art of Albert Christoph Dies
Born in Hanover, Germany, Albert Christoph Dies was a painter, engraver, and biographer. His artistic journey took him from studying at the academy of Düsseldorf to a period of living in Rome, where he sought a livelihood by copying pictures, particularly those by Salvator Rosa. During his time in Italy, his interest in nature led him to draw and paint in picturesque locations such as Tivoli and Albano. He also spent time in Naples and traveled through Mannheim and Basel. While in Rome, he composed music, though his compositions were later destroyed. His career eventually led him to Vienna, where he served as a landscape painter, a draughtsman, and an etcher, and later held the position of gallery director to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II.
Literary and Artistic Legacy
Dies is notably recognized for his biography of Joseph Haydn, a work based on a series of thirty visits made to the composer between 1805 and 1808. Although his biographical writing is often described as sentimental, it remains a substantial source of information regarding Haydn's life. As a visual artist, his work included a series of seventy-two plates titled Collection de vues pittoresques de l'Italie, published in Nuremberg in 1799. His landscape painting is exemplified by his 1809 work, View of the Area around Eisenstadt (Hungary), which is held in the Berlinische Galerie. His physical health declined following the accidental ingestion of lead acetate, which resulted in the loss of the use of one of his hands before his death in Vienna.
