Een leven in kleur en vorm
Sir William Blake Richmond was een Britse schilder, beeldhouwer en ontwerper van glas-in-lood en mozaïek. Geboren in Londen, Verenigd Koninkrijk, was hij de zoon van de portrettenschilder George Richmond en Julia Tatham. Zijn artistieke reis begon met privéles aan huis, gevolgd door drie jaar lang de studie tekenen en schilderen aan de Royal Academy of Art vanaf 1858. Een cruciale periode in zijn ontwikkeling vond plaats tijdens een zesweekse reis door Italië, waar hij de meesterwerken van oude grootmeesters zoals Michelangelo, Tintoretto en Giotto in zich opnam.
Richmond boekte al vroeg succes als portrettenschilder en exposeerde zijn eerste grote werk in 1861 bij de Royal Academy. Zijn uitzonderlijke talent leidde tot zijn verkiezing tot Associate van de Royal Academy in 1888 en tot Royal Academician in 1895. Naast de portretkunst was hij een productief ontwerper van monumentale decoraties, waarvan de mozaïeken in het koor en de apsis van de St Paul's Cathedral in Londen de meest prominente zijn.

Zijn werk in het mozaïekontwerp kenmerkte zich door een levendige behandeling met grillig, onregelmatig glas dat in verschillende hoeken werd geplaatst om het licht te vangen. Deze techniek, beïnvloed door de Byzantijnse en vroegchristelijke stijlen, ontstond uit een samenwerking met de glasmakers James Powell and Sons om nieuwe kleuren en materialen te ontwikkelen. Deze innovaties breidden het kleurenpalet uit dat beschikbaar was voor kunstenaars binnen de Arts and Crafts-beweging. Zijn ontwerpen voor glas-in-lood, zoals die in St Mary's, Stretton, maakten gebruik van dik, gestreept glas om de schitterende effecten van zijn mozaïekwerk na te bootsen.
