judith jans leyster, een pionier onder de vrouwelijke schilders, werd in juli 1609 geboren in haarlem, nederland. zij was het achtste kind van jan willemsz leyster, een lakenmaker die later brouwer werd. hoewel haar opleiding niet uitgebreid is gedocumenteerd, wordt aangenomen dat zij de schilderkunst leerde van frans pietersz de grebber, een gerespecteerd kunstenaar met een atelier in haarlem.artistieke carrière
leysters eerste bekende gesigneerde werken, serenade en jolly topper, stammen uit 1629, toen zij pas twintig jaar oud was. tegen 1633 werd zij lid van het haarlemse sint-lukasgilde, waardoor zij een van de eerste vrouwelijke kunstenaars was die deel uitmaakte van deze prestigieuze organisatie.opmerkelijke werken en samenwerkingen
