While much of Montaut’s early life remains shrouded in the mists of history, his artistic evolution is etched clearly into the lithographic stones he mastered. Emerging onto the Parisian scene in the mid-1890s, he quickly moved beyond simple illustration to become a pioneer of graphic innovation. He possessed an uncanny ability to translate the raw energy of motion onto a static medium. This was achieved through his most celebrated contribution to the art of advertising: the invention of speed lines.
