Unconventionally for an artist, Rossell initially pursued academic studies in economics, law, and sociology at institutions in Barcelona and Madrid. This diverse educational background would later inform his conceptually driven artistic practice.

The Parisian Years & Artistic Awakening

A pivotal moment arrived in 1964 when Rossell relocated to Paris, France. This move marked a significant turning point, as the city became his base for extensive exploration of various cultures and artistic expressions. He embarked on numerous travels, notably to India, Nepal, and New York, immersing himself in diverse environments and artistic traditions. During this period, he also received training in theatre and cinema, further broadening his creative horizons.

Collaboration & The Catalan Artists in Paris

In Paris, Rossell became a key figure among the ‘Catalan artists in Paris,’ forging strong collaborative relationships with contemporaries such as Jaume Xifra, Antoni Miralda, and Joan Rabascall. Despite their varied professional backgrounds, these artists frequently collaborated on projects that reflected a shared interest in exploring the ceremonial and ritual aspects of art. This collective spirit fostered innovation and experimentation within their individual practices.

Artistic Development & Key Themes

Rossell’s artistic output was remarkably diverse, encompassing experimental film, performance art, calligraphy, and sculpture. He developed a unique approach often referred to as ‘artor,’ which blended elements of art, ritual, and performance. His work frequently explored themes of ritual, language, fragility, and the ephemeral nature of existence. He was particularly interested in challenging conventional artistic boundaries and engaging audiences in thought-provoking experiences.

Throughout his career, Rossell exhibited his work internationally and gained recognition for his innovative approach to artmaking. His works are featured in prominent collections, including the MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona).
