Early Life, Family and Training
Therese Schachner entered the world in Vienna on 29 May 1869. She was born into a household where the lines of design and structure were a constant presence, being the daughter of the architect Friedrich Schachner. This environment, shaped by her father's professional focus on the built form, provided a foundation for her own creative inclinations. Growing up in the heart of Austria, she began to cultivate a talent that would eventually lead her away from the drafting tables of architecture and toward the canvas.
Her formal education in the arts was shaped by the guidance of significant figures in the Austrian landscape tradition. She sought instruction from the landscape painter Hugo Darnaut, whose influence helped direct her eye toward the natural world. This training was further deepened through her studies with Albin Egger-Lienz. These early mentors provided her with the technical grounding necessary to navigate the evolving artistic landscape of her time.
As her ambitions grew, Therese Schachner sought out new perspectives beyond the familiar streets of Vienna. Between 1905 and 1907, she traveled to Dachau to attend courses led by Adolf Hölzl and Ludwig Dill. These years of study allowed her to refine her vision and expand her understanding of composition and light. Through this diverse lineage of teachers, she developed the skills that would define her career as a painter and a composer.
Artistic Style and Technique
Her brushwork reveals a deep affinity for the Impressionist style, capturing the fleeting nuances of light and atmosphere. She was an excellent landscape painter, often turning her gaze toward the natural world to translate its quietude onto canvas. In her hands, the medium of oil became a tactile experience; she frequently employed an impasto technique, building up the paint to create a physical presence on the surface. This heavy application of pigment allowed her to catch the light, giving her scenes a luminous quality that seemed to glow from within.
Beyond the visual realm, her creative spirit sought expression through sound. In Vienna, she was known to work as a sound artist, a pursuit that mirrored her sensitivity to the rhythms of the natural world. This dual nature as both a painter and a composer suggests a mind that perceived the world through multiple sensory layers. Her compositions and her paintings both reflect a search for harmony, whether through the arrangement of notes or the careful placement of color.
Key Works and Artistic Circles
The landscape of her creative life was deeply intertwined with the Plankenberg painter circle. This connection emerged during the years when her teacher, Hugo Darnaut, resided at Plankenberg Castle in Lower Austria. While she may not have occupied the innermost circle surrounding Emil Jakob Schindler, the environment of the castle provided a fertile ground for her to develop her vision. Many of her works were born from the scenery surrounding this estate, capturing the light and spirit of the Austrian countryside through her unique perspective.
Her brushwork found a particular expression in her oil on canvas works, where she sought to translate the shifting moods of nature. One such piece, titled In the Evening Sun, captures a specific sense of light and atmosphere. This work, known in its original form as In der Abendsonne, was painted before 1917. Through her use of impasto, she gave a physical presence to the light, creating a surface that seems to hold the warmth of the setting sun within its layers of color.
