A Life of Scholarship and Art
Siegfried Schott was a German Egyptologist and artist born in Berlin. His multifaceted career spanned roles as a painter, printmaker, graphic artist, writer, and librettist. During the early 1920s, he was active as a painter and graphic artist, contributing to the Hamburg expressionist art magazine Kündung. His woodcuts from this period are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1923, he released a volume of poetry.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Schott was a dedicated academic. He studied philosophy, German studies, art history, and archaeology at the universities of Freiburg and Marburg. He earned his doctorate in 1926 with a dissertation on the history of writing in the Pyramid Texts. His scholarly work included making hieroglyphic transcriptions of various mythological papyri in hieratic script at the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.
Academic and Professional Journey
Schott's professional life included significant roles in various institutions. He served as a scientific assistant at the Egyptian Museum in Berlin and as a scientific consultant at the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo. He also worked as an epigrapher for the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in Luxor. Later in his career, he held several academic positions, including serving as a professor of Egyptology at the University of Göttingen.
