The Visionary of Estonian Avant-Garde
Born in 1941, Raul Meel is an Estonian artist and concrete poet whose creative practice spans a diverse range of mediums, including printmaking, painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, and artists' books. A self-taught artist who studied electrical engineering at Tallinn Technical University, Meel emerged in the late 1960s as a prominent figure of the Estonian avant-garde. His work is characterized by a departure from the officially accepted artistic practices of the Soviet period, leading him to remain outside the official artists' union until 1987. His unique visual language, shaped by his engineering training, has been associated with conceptual art, minimalism, and concrete poetry.
Technique and Artistic Legacy
Meel is particularly recognized for his typewriter drawings, screenprints, and text-based visual structures that merge language with imagery. One of his most significant contributions is the serial screenprint cycle Under the Sky, begun in 1973, which utilizes engineer-technical graphs alongside a color palette of blue, black, and white. Another notable work is Singing Tree, a typewriter drawing and screenprint where words are arranged into a visual image. His oeuvre explores the intricate relationships between technology, nature, poetry, and art. His international presence is marked by exhibitions at the Venice Biennale satellite exhibition and the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, with his works held in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Museum of Estonia.
