His artistic reach extended from large-scale murals to delicate watercolors and children's book illustrations. As a freelance illustrator, he maintained a long-standing professional relationship with Scott Foresman publishers and contributed seasonal newspaper advertisements for Marshall Field's. He also painted George Martin's Home Overlooking Old Naper Hill for the Naperville, Illinois post office and a thirteen-panel mural for the Neil House Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.
Bennett also gained recognition for his watercolor series. In 1939, he produced thirty-six watercolors of Venezuela on commission from the Stanford Oil Company and Nelson Rockefeller.
