The Journey of Mary Barnes
Mary Barnes was an English artist and writer born in Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Her life was marked by a significant transition from a nursing career, which included service in the army during World War II and work in Egypt, Palestine, and Frankfurt, to a profound artistic awakening. Following a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a period of regression therapy at Kingsley Hall in London, she discovered a talent for art. Her creative process evolved from early marks made with grease crayons and finger-painting to the mastery of oil painting.
Her evocative works often focused on religious themes and were characterized by vivid colors. These paintings were first exhibited at the Camden Arts Centre in 1969 and later toured worldwide. In her later years, she moved to Scotland, eventually residing in Tomintoul. Her legacy has been celebrated through various exhibitions, including the Rebirth series, and her archives have been acquired by the Wellcome Collection.
