Fanny Holroyd was born in Moonee Ponds in 1863. She grew up as the daughter of John Alexander Macpherson, who served as the premier of Victoria, and Louisa Elizabeth Fetherstonhaugh. Her early years were shaped by this connection to the political life of the colony. She was an Australian-British painter who would eventually move far from the surroundings of her birth.

Her training took her to London, where she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. It was here that she focused on the technical demands of her craft.
