The Weight of Matter
Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban, France, 1941. A young boy struggles with asthma and schoolwork, yet finds a different kind of rhythm in drawing and painting. The son of a chemist and a school teacher, Bernar Venet moves through a religious upbringing with intentions of becoming a missionary. This early tension between spiritual aspiration and the physical reality of the world begins to shift when he discovers a book on Pierre-Auguste Renoir at age eleven.
The transition from student to creator arrives through grit and unconventional methods. In 1959, he works as a stage designer at the Nice Opera. By 1961, after joining the French Army, his practice takes a raw, visceral turn. He paints with tar. He uses his feet to apply the thick, black substance in gestural movements. This period produces monochromatic works that reject the traditional action of painting, focusing instead on the heavy, industrial presence of coal and asphalt.
The 1960s bring a radical expansion of scale and material. In Paris, he encounters the New Realists, finding common ground with artists like Arman and César Baldaccini. He begins sculpting with cardboard, pushing the boundaries of what a sculpture can be. His work Tas de Charbon ("Pile of Coal") emerges—a piece devoid of a specific shape, where the coal is not merely a medium but the artwork itself. It is a sculpture that can change its size or exist in multiple locations simultaneously.
The Logic of the Line
New York City, 1966. A two-month visit changes everything. The influence of Minimalism takes hold. Venet moves to New York in 1967, sharing a studio with Arman at 84 Walker Street. The focus shifts from the heavy, gestural application of tar to the precision of mathematical functions. He begins to replace subjective vision with rational, objective knowledge.
The work becomes an investigation into the line. He utilizes mathematical formulas, geometric diagrams, and scientific structures to dictate form. This era introduces several recurring themes:
- Arcs: Curved steel forms that explore spatial tension.
- Indeterminate Lines: Series that investigate randomness and mathematical uncertainty.
- Angles: Assemblages of acute angles, often executed in industrial Corten steel.
Between 1971 and 1976, the production stops. Venet enters a period of retrospection, teaching Art and Art Theory at the Paris-Sorbonne University. He travels through England, Italy, Poland, and Belgium, absorbing theory before returning to active creation in 1976 with his appearance at Documenta VI.
Monumental Presence
The later decades see the scale of Venet's work reach monumental proportions. His sculptures, often made of industrial steel, are placed in public squares and vast landscapes. Large-scale installations appear in Hong Kong, Belgium, and New Zealand. In 2012, his work reaches a new medium when Bugatti invites him to apply an artwork to a Veyron Grand Sport—a piece described as the fastest artwork ever.
His career is marked by significant institutional recognition:
- Recipient of the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
- Named Chevalier de La Legion d’Honneur in 2005.
- Establishment of the Venet Foundation in Le Muy, France.
The work remains rooted in the tension between order and randomness. Whether through the heavy presence of a steel arc or the precise placement of an indeterminate line, the objective remains to use scientific analysis to expand the language of art. His 65-year career continues to be defined by this pursuit of structural logic.
