A Life Shaped by Gardens and Canvas

Born in 1783 at Cleish, near Kinross, Scotland, Andrew Henderson’s early years were rooted in the soil of his father's work as a gardener. His path began not with a brush, but with the careful tending of landscapes. At thirteen, he was apprenticed to his brother Thomas, working within the gardens at Bellevue in Edinburgh. This connection to the earth continued through roles in the gardens of Dupplin Castle and Hopetoun House. However, a physical constitution that struggled with the rigors of outdoor labor eventually led him away from the garden paths and toward a different kind of creation.

After finding himself working as a foreman for a company in Paisley, Renfrewshire, a deep interest in pictorial art began to take hold. He sought out a drawing school, a decision that would fundamentally alter his direction. In 1809, he traveled to London to study at the Royal Academy, spending several years refining his skills among the most formal training available to him at the time. This period of study provided the technical foundation for the career that awaited him upon his return to Scotland.

The Portrait Painter of Glasgow

By 1813, Henderson had settled in Glasgow, where he established himself as a portrait painter. He lived and worked at 24 Ingram Street, becoming a recognizable figure in the local art scene for roughly twenty years. His work was characterized by its focus on the people of his community, capturing the likenesses of friends and notable figures such as the poet William Motherwell and Thomas Atkinson. His presence in the city was marked by both his professional success and his distinct personality.

Those who knew him described a man of great contrast. He possessed a fiery temperament and spoke with a certain impetuosity, yet he was known for a broad sense of humor that made him well-liked by his friends. Though he was a large man with a sharp, shrill voice, his character left a lasting impression on the social circles of Glasgow. His involvement in the local arts community was further cemented when he became a founding member of the Glasgow Dilettanti Society in 1825.

Literary Contributions and Final Years

Henderson’s creativity extended beyond the oil canvas into the realm of print and prose. In 1832, he published a collection titled Scottish Proverbs, which featured etchings he produced himself. This work demonstrated his ability to blend visual art with the preservation of local culture. He also contributed to The Laird of Logan; Anecdotes and Tales illustrative of the Wit and Humour of Scotland, a book that gathered stories and wit from himself and his close companions.

His life came to an end in Glasgow on 9 April 1835, following an apoplectic fit. He was laid to rest in the Glasgow Necropolis. While his time as a painter was relatively brief, his contributions to the portraiture and the cultural publications of Scotland remain a part of the history of his home city.
