The Antwerp Academy and Early Years

André Plumot began his training within the walls of the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He sat in the classrooms of H. Van der Poorten and registered for lessons under E. Dujardin and J. A. Verschaeren. His early years were shaped by the studios of others, including time spent working with N. de Keyser, H. Carpentero, and A. Lion. These early associations provided a foundation in the technical demands of the craft.

In 1849, health concerns led him away from the structured life of the Academy. He moved to Kalmthout, finding a different kind of instruction through his surroundings and his work alongside J. Rosseels and I. Meyers. Later, he spent time in the Ardennes with J. Van Luppen. These shifts in location brought him closer to the subjects that would define his brushwork.

A Focus on the Rural and the Real

His eyes often rested on the quiet movements of the countryside. He found a particular interest in the Polders, where he watched the behavior of animals. His paintings frequently feature sheep, goats, and poultry, captured within animated landscapes. These scenes are not staged for drama but reflect the steady rhythm of life in places like Kalmthout and the Espierre Casel.

Beyond the open fields, Plumot turned his attention to the stillness of interiors. He looked back toward the 16th and 17th centuries when composing these rooms, recreating the atmosphere of older eras through oil on canvas. His work often brings together different elements of a single scene:

  • The texture of animals like calves and sheep.
  • The quiet weight of historical interior settings.
  • The presence of figures, including children and young women.
  • The light found in river landscapes and farmhouses.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Plumot’s work traveled far beyond the borders of Belgium. His paintings were hung in galleries across London, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Edinburgh, Adelaide, and Melbourne. In 1876, his efforts in Philadelphia were recognized with a medal. This period of his life saw his art moving through various international spaces, from Brussels and Gent to the more distant reaches of Australia.

Today, pieces of his output remain in collections such as the Museum of Antwerp and the Warrington Museum and Art Gallery. Works like The Footbridge, The Calf, and Return continue to show the specific way he observed the world around him. He remained connected to his birthplace, eventually passing away in Antwerp in 1906.
