Autoriaus biografija

Early Life and Training in Ghent

Jacques-François Delyen entered the world in Ghent on July 25, 1684. His early years in the County of Flanders provided the foundation for a life spent observing the faces and textures of others. The quiet beginnings of his life in Ghent eventually led him toward the formal study of painting, a path that would define his presence in the French art scene.

Between 1710 and 1715, Jacques-François Delyen worked as an apprentice under Nicolas de Largillierre. This period of study was formative, as he spent those years absorbing the specific mannerisms and technical habits of his teacher. He was a pupil of Nicolas de Largillierre, and the influence of the older man's style remained visible in the way Delyen approached his subjects. He watched how Largillierre handled light and form, adopting a similar way of seeing that would later characterize his own hand.

Academic Career and Professional Life

Delyen established himself within the French art scene through a steady focus on portraiture. His path toward formal recognition led him to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, where he gained admission in 1725. This acceptance was secured through his Academy pieces and specific portraits of the painter Nicolas Bertin and the sculptor Guillaume Coustou.

His presence in the institutional art world continued for many years. Between 1737 and 1747, he exhibited his works regularly at the Academy. These appearances marked a period of consistent professional activity in Paris before his death in 1761. His work often reflected the technical precision required by the Academy, particularly in how he handled the likenesses of his subjects.

Notable Portraiture and Self-Portraits

Delyen’s brushwork often turned inward, capturing the faces of those closest to him. In 1714, he painted a self-portrait that now resides in the musée des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes. That same year, he produced a portrait of his mother, a work also held in the musée des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes. These early pieces show a steady hand focused on the quiet presence of the individual.

As his reputation grew, his subjects became figures of professional standing. In 1725, he completed a portrait of the sculptor Guillaume Coustou. This work helped secure his admission to the Royal Academy. During that same year, he painted Nicolas Bertin, a painter shown working on a preparatory drawing for his own canvas. These portraits demonstrate a specific interest in the way light settles on the textures of skin and the tools of a trade.

  • Portrait of a man, 1739
  • Portrait of a woman at the well, 1742
  • Man drinking under a vine, 1745
  • Portrait of Nicolas René Berryer, 1750

Other Significant Works

Beyond his formal academic studies, Delyen’s brush captured various subjects that moved away from the strictures of official portraiture. In 1731, he painted La Marmotte. This work shows a different side of his interest in subject matter. Later, in 1739, he turned his attention to a portrait of a man, focusing on the individual's presence. These pieces demonstrate how he applied his technical skill to different compositions throughout his career in Paris.

His later years saw him continuing to document the people of his time. In 1742, he produced a portrait of a woman at the well, a scene that suggests a specific, perhaps more informal, setting. By 1750, his work included the portrait of Nicolas René Berryer, who served as a lieutenant de police. This painting remains a record of the man's position and likeness during that period.
