The Evolution of Viennese Actionism
Otto Muehl was an Austrian artist, painter, and performance artist who became a central figure in the movement known as Viennese Actionism. His early artistic pursuits focused on the destruction of easel painting, often manifesting through the creation of rhizomatic structures made from scrap iron. This experimental approach transitioned into the performance-based "Aktion," where the artist utilized the body as a primary scene of action. Notable performances included Die Blutorgel, alongside Adolf Frohner and Hermann Nitsch, as well as the Fest des psycho-physischen Naturalismus and Versumpfung einer Venus. During the mid-1960s, many of these Malaktionen were documented through film and photography.
From Art to Life and Later Works
Muehl’s practice eventually shifted from public actions toward a concept he described as the "transition from art to life," leading to the establishment of the Friedrichshof Commune. In his later years, his work evolved into an expressionist painting style. Even while serving a prison sentence, he remained artistically engaged, producing approximately 300 paintings and writing on art theory. Despite facing Parkinson's disease, he continued to create, even developing a method of digital painting called "electric painting films." His later career included exhibitions at the Vienna Museum for applied art and a show in New York titled Temple Destroyer.
