Throughout his career, Matulla was deeply involved in the Austrian art community, becoming a member of the Zentralverband bildender Künstler Österreichs and later serving as the Vice-President of the Wiener Secession. He was also a founding member of the Gruppe 64, a union of artists from Lower Austria.

He worked extensively with various media, including oil paintings, watercolors, and a wide array of graphic techniques such as linocut, woodcut, copper engraving, and lithography.
