The Life and Art of Muirhead Bone
Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish etcher and watercolourist born in Partick, Glasgow. His early professional life included apprenticeships as a painter of porcelain and as an architect's draughtsman. He later studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he began printmaking in 1898. His artistic practice primarily focused on landscapes and architecture, including Gothic cathedrals, Norman buildings, and urban construction or demolition sites.
Bone moved to London in 1901 and became a member of the New English Art Club. He held his first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in 1902. His work often featured industrial subjects, such as shipyards on the Clyde. During the First World War, he was appointed as the first official British war artist in May 1916, producing drawings of the Western Front and the Royal Navy.
War Service and Later Years
As a war artist, Bone produced numerous drawings, including works depicting architectural ruins in France. He also contributed to publications such as The Western Front and With the Grand Fleet. In the inter-war period, his travels took him to France, Italy, and the Netherlands, and he later produced the folio Old Spain.
During the Second World War, Bone served as a member of the War Artists' Advisory Committee and worked for the Ministry of Information, specializing in Admiralty subjects like coastal installations and portraits of officers. He held several prominent positions, serving as a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery, and the Imperial War Museum. He died in Oxford.
