The Artistry of Micka Pavlič
Born in Selca, Slovenia, Micka Pavlič was a prolific folk artist who specialized in several distinct mediums. After learning her craft from her father, Andrej Pavlič, she eventually opened her own studio in Selca. Her technical mastery was particularly evident in her production of beehive panels, which featured scenes ranging from biblical narratives to secular motifs. She also created glass paintings for home altars and wood carvings, including devotional plaques known as bridke mantre. Her work is characterized by highly stylized figures defined by posture, clothing, and activity, rendered in a palette of reds, ochre, browns, blues, and greens.
Pavlič utilized a unique method for decorating her beehive panels, employing stencils with numerous tiny holes. By tapping a bag of powdered pigment over these stencils, she achieved sharp, vibrant designs that have remained remarkably intact. Her extensive workshop catalogue included at least 141 distinct motifs, split between 71 religious and 70 secular themes. These motifs encompassed a wide variety of subjects, such as:
Legacy and Teaching
Micka Pavlič's influence extended through her role as a teacher, passing her skills to her sister's grandson, Peter Žmitek, who became a renowned Slovenian painter. Throughout her life, she remained dedicated to her art, living in Selca until her death. Her artistic output is preserved in significant collections, including the Slovene Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana and the Loški muzej in Škofja Loka. Her beehive panels and glass paintings continue to serve as important examples of 19th-century Carniolan folk painting.
