Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in 1740, John Paxton emerged from a Scottish background to pursue a life defined by the brush and the canvas. His early development as a painter began in Glasgow, where he sought formal instruction as a student at Foulis's art academy. This foundational period provided the technical grounding necessary for a young artist of his era to move beyond local boundaries.

Seeking a broader perspective, Paxton eventually traveled to Rome to further his studies. This period of continental training was a common rite of passage for ambitious painters of the eighteenth century, allowing him to absorb the classical influences that would inform his later subjects. His time in Italy helped shape the sensibilities he would eventually bring back to the British art scene.

Professional Career and Exhibitions

Paxton’s professional standing was established through his involvement with the Incorporated Society of Artists, where he was among the original members. In 1766, he signed the society's declaration roll, and that same year, he sent the work Samson in Distress to their exhibition from Rome. His presence in the London art scene continued as he exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy in 1769 and 1770.

By 1775, his influence within the Society of Artists had grown, and he was appointed as a director. While his output for the Society consisted chiefly of portraits, he also applied his brush to scriptural, classical, and historical subjects. His practice was marked by a steady demand for portraiture, a pursuit that would eventually lead him toward commissions in India.

Later Years and Death

By 1770, Paxton had established a steady presence in London, settling in Charlotte Street, Rathbone Place. His practice flourished there as he maintained a reputation for capturing the likenesses of his contemporaries. While his earlier years were marked by a diverse interest in scriptural and classical subjects, his focus increasingly gravitated toward the precision required of portraiture.

The trajectory of his career took a significant turn when he received commissions to paint portraits in India. This professional undertaking required a departure from his established London studio, and he departed for the subcontinent about 1776. This move represented a final, ambitious chapter in a life dedicated to the study of form and character.

His time in India was cut short. He died in Bombay in 1780, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the varied demands of a traveling painter. His presence in the art world remains tied to the portraits he left in the hands of those who sat for him, including his fellow-pupil James Tassie.
