The Life and Art of Jerry Bywaters
Born in Paris, Texas, Jerry Bywaters was a multifaceted American artist, journalist, art historian, and critic. His early introduction to art began during a childhood accident that kept him out of school, leading him to find entertainment through drawing. After attending the Terrill Preparatory School for Boys in Dallas, he enrolled at Southern Methodist University, earning degrees in English and Journalism, as well as General Literature. His artistic journey took him to Europe to study art and later to Mexico, where he met Diego Rivera and learned that art must be a reflection of life to be significant. After studying at the Art Students League in New York City under John Sloan, Bywaters returned to the Southwest to pursue a professional career in art.
Artistic Contributions and Regional Impact
Bywaters’s diverse body of work included landscapes, still lifes, portrait paintings, lithographic prints, and murals. He was a prominent figure in the movement known as Lone Star Regionalism and was a founding member of the Lone Star Printmakers. His commitment to making art accessible led him to use lithography to reach middle-class audiences. Beyond his studio practice, he served as a faculty member at Southern Methodist University for forty years and acted as the art director for the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. As an art critic for The Dallas Morning News, he became a leading spokesman for Texas regionalism, advocating for the merits of the region's artists.
