The Artistic Journey of James P. Cook
Born in the United States, James P. Cook is an American painter who has spent much of his career in Tucson, Arizona. His artistic foundation was built through studies at Washburn University and Emporia State University, where he earned both a BA and MA in art. He furthered his technical training at Wichita State University, earning an MFA in 1972. Early in his career, Cook honed his skills by painting stage flats for high school theater productions. After a period as an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona, he transitioned to a full-time painting career, a move solidified by a successful exhibition at the Frumkin/Struve Gallery in Chicago.
Style and Technique
Cook is recognized for his expressive, monumental landscapes and urban scenes. His work is characterized by a vigorous use of paint, employing thick, impasto surfaces and a bravura handling of color. He often utilizes a palette knife to apply paint in thick gobs onto linen canvases, creating sculptural, textural surfaces. His process frequently begins with plein air sketching in locations such as the Arizona mountains, the hills of Kansas, or Idaho's Silver Creek Preserve. In the studio, he often begins with a grisaille—a black and white underpainting—to establish composition before applying layers of color. His subject matter ranges from craggy mountains and seascapes to industrial scenes and the figure, often navigating the tension between realism and abstraction.
