The Quarryman's Vision
Born on June 28, 1853, at Chwarel Goch, Tre-garth, near Bethesda, John Thomas Parry lived a life shaped by the rugged landscape of Wales. He was one of seven children born to Henry Parry and Ann. His early years were defined by the heavy labor of the Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda, where he worked as a quarryman. Yet, even amidst the dust and toil of the stone industry, a different kind of vision began to emerge. He found a way to transform the very material he extracted into a canvas, using pieces of slate to capture the world around him.
Parry was a self-taught man, finding his way through the natural textures of his environment. He often signed his work with the bardic name Ap Idwal, a mark of his identity and his connection to his roots. His transition from a laborer to a recognized painter was gradual. While the census of 1881 and 1891 recorded him as an artist-painter, it was not until 1901 that he was described simply as an artist and landscape painter, having left the quarry to work from his home.
Artistry on Slate
His technique was as unique as the medium he chose. By applying watercolours directly onto pieces of slate, he created works that felt inseparable from the earth of North Wales. This choice of material allowed him to document the scenery of Dyffryn Ogwen and the surrounding valleys with a directness that few others could achieve. His subjects were the landmarks and quiet corners of his home, often rendered with a sense of place that resonated with those who lived there.
His body of work includes several notable subjects that remain preserved in important collections:
- Castell Dolbadarn
- Pont Tŵr
- Pont Ogwen
- Bryn Llys
- Cwm Idwal, Sunset
A Lasting Impression
The impact of his work reached beyond the local community. It is said that his paintings made such an impression on Lady Penrhyn that she offered to fund his professional training at a School of Art. Though he remained a man of the people, his talent earned him a place in significant institutions. His paintings can be found in Penrhyn Castle and the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth.
One of his most poignant works is a colour depiction of the hamlet of Bryn Llys, a place that was buried under the slate tips of the Penrhyn Quarry over a century ago. Through his brush, these lost landscapes were preserved. John Thomas Parry passed away on March 21, 1913, at the Workhouse Hospital in Bangor. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Coetmor Cemetery, Bethesda, leaving behind a visual record of a landscape and a way of life that has since changed forever.
