The Studio and the Screen
Ivan Csudai lives and works in Bratislava, a place where his hands have moved between the delicate work of painting restoration and the broader strokes of acrylic on canvas. His training began at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava during the mid-seventies, leading him eventually to the Academy of Fine Arts in the same city. There, he studied under the guidance of I. Meszácrová and Vladimír Úradníček, focusing on the technical precision required for restoration. This early immersion in the physical makeup of art—the layers, the pigments, the very skin of a canvas—remains visible in his later approach to surface and texture.
His time in Vienna during the early nineties, as a Herder Prize scholarship holder in the studio of Arnulf Rainer, brought new perspectives to his practice. This period helped shape a style that sits within Slovak postmodernism, where he began to layer meaning through a specific set of recurring symbols. His work often feels like a collection of fragments, much like the musical albums he released between 1992 and 2011. He has balanced the quiet discipline of an academy teacher with the rhythmic energy of an art rocker, releasing eight solo titles in total.
Symbols and Interiors
The imagery in his paintings often rests on a familiar, almost domestic foundation. In his "living room paintings," he depicts furnished interiors where sofas, armchairs, chests of drawers, and lamps are crowded into the frame. These spaces feel settled yet heavy with presence. Within these rooms, certain figures appear repeatedly: skulls, fish, little birds, and flags. A particular focus in recent years has been a series of works featuring a teddy bear. This stuffed figure acts as a silent witness within his compositions, appearing alongside other elements like heads and color streaks that suggest a layer of stains or spatters across the surface.
His technique often involves a net of color streaks and drips that cover the underlying subjects. The application of acrylic and oil on canvas, or even on plate, allows for a certain density of material. In some works, the contours are sharp, while in others, they are obscured by the physical weight of the paint itself. This duality is seen in his collaborations, such as those with Šimon Kučera, where geometric color fields meet his more fluid, contoured approach.
A Career of Layers
Since 2001, he has held the position of head of the 4th studio at the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, eventually being appointed professor in 2005. This long-standing connection to the academy mirrors the layers found in his "Autobiography" series. His exhibitions have taken him through various galleries, from the Alfa Gallery in Košice to the Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava. Each exhibition has presented a different facet of his accumulated visual language:
- The 2014 exhibition Autobiograf at Alfa Gallery, Košice.
- The 2019 exhibition V zrkadle maľby in Trnava.
- The 2020 exhibition Modrá lampa with Michal Černušák in Košice.
- Recent works featuring the teddy bear from 2021 and 2022.
His output is not limited to the canvas; he has also worked extensively in graphics and graphic design. The transition between these mediums is seamless, as the same eye for detail used in restoration informs the way he constructs a print or a poster. His life's work remains a continuous process of looking at the familiar—a teddy bear, a chair, a skull—and reconfiguring them into new, often crowded, pictorial contexts.
