A Life Shaped by Resistance

Hendricus Antonius Henriët lived a life defined by the heavy realities of his era. Born in Amsterdam in 1903, his early path was shaped by a chance encounter when a bookseller recognized his natural talent for drawing. This discovery led him to study at various institutions, including schools in Paris, where he refined a style rooted in realism and an expressive use of line.

His personal life was deeply intertwined with his art and his convictions. In 1923, he began living with Gerarda Antonia Maria, known as Tonia, who would later become his wife in 1939. She also served as a frequent subject for his work. During the 1930s, Henriët’s identity as a communist and his involvement with the anti-fascist Union of Artists for the Defense of Cultural Rights became central to his existence. This commitment to political resistance moved beyond the canvas and into dangerous action during the German occupation.

The final years of his life were marked by the struggle of the Dutch resistance. He used his skills to forge documents and provided hiding places for those in need. This bravery led to his arrest in December 1944. After being held in Amers Foort and later the Neuengamme concentration camp, he was moved to the ship Cap Arcona. On May 3, 1945, during a British bombing of Lübeck Bay, Henriët lost his life along with thousands of other prisoners.

The Art of the Everyday

Henriët’s body of work reflects a deep sensitivity to the world around him. As an Impressionist and Modern artist, he focused on capturing the essence of his subjects through careful shading and a sense of immediacy. His repertoire was diverse, spanning paintings, drawings, graphic art, and sculpture.

His subjects often included:

  • Portraits and self-portraits, such as his 1942 Zelfportret.
  • Scenes of daily life, including figures in landscapes or cityscapes.
  • Works featuring children, like Slapend kind.
  • Sculptural pieces, most notably the bronze cast of a folk woman known as Volksvrouw, which now serves as a memorial on Marnixplein in Amsterdam.

In his graphic work and drawings, he utilized expressive lines to bring weight to his figures. Whether depicting a man reading by a bookseller's stall or a landscape with a red barn amidst fields, his technique remained grounded in the tangible details of the Dutch landscape and human form.
