The Artistic Life of Georgii Stenberg

Georgii Stenberg was a multifaceted artist whose creative practice spanned the disciplines of illustration, graphic design, painting, sculpture, and draftsmanship. Born in Moscow, Russia, he was part of a family of artists, including his brother Wladimir and sister Lidija. His formal training began at the Imperial Stroganov Central School of Art and Industry in Moscow and continued at the State Free Art Workshops. His work was characterized by a turn toward Constructivism, where he produced abstract color constructions using materials such as glass, metal, and wood, as well as industrial models.

Beyond his abstract works, Stenberg was active in revolutionary agitprop activities, contributing to the design of decorations and posters for the May Day celebrations of 1918. His professional reach extended into the theatrical realm, where he designed stage sets for various productions at the Moscow Chamber Theater, including works such as The Hairy Ape and The Threepenny Opera. His career was cut short when he died in Moscow following a motorcycle accident.
