The Life and Art of Clare Marsh
Born Emily Cecil Clare Marsh in Bray, Ireland, this Irish artist focused her creative energy on still life and portraiture. Her early years were spent in the house of her maternal grandfather, Andrew McCullagh, in New Court, County Wicklow. Throughout her career, Marsh exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy, beginning in 1900 with works such as East wind effect and Roses. Her portfolio included portraits of Lily Yeats and Jack Butler Yeats, as well as depictions of children and dogs. In her later years, her work transitioned toward night studies and a greater use of color, as seen in her portrait of Mrs Susan Yeats.
Artistic Practice and Legacy
Marsh’s technical development was shaped by various studies, including night classes in sculpture at the Metropolitan School of Art and a course at Norman Garstin's studio in Penzance. Her painting style, particularly evident in her portrait of Lord Ashbourne held by the Hugh Lane Gallery, is characterized by loose brush strokes and an air of informality. Beyond her own studio work, she was a significant figure in the Dublin art scene, serving as the Professor of Fine Arts at Alexandra College in 1916 and becoming a founding member of the Society of Dublin Painters. Her artistic output remained consistent through her exhibitions at the RHA from 1900 to 1921.
