A Life Between Norway and Denmark

Stavanger, 1841. A child is born into a family of wealthy merchants, the son of Lauritz Wilhelm Hansen and Elisa Margaretha Sundt. The path ahead seems carved in stone: the takeover of the family business, Plough & Sundt. But the brush calls louder than the ledger. By 1859, the merchant's son is studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He moves through the halls of private schools and eventually finds himself at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

The trajectory shifts toward the great art centers of Europe. In 1866, he arrives in Paris. He walks the same streets as Meissonier and Delaroché, absorbing their influence. The work produced during these years carries a specific weight. One notable piece, A Savoyard ironing a Sulfur Stick to light his Paper Cigarette, appears at the Kristiania Kunstforening in 1867. It presents a clear, true depiction of a boy, marked by a realistic and optimistic attitude.

The years are marked by movement and name changes. In 1878, he adopts his mother's maiden name, Sundt. By 1889, he becomes a Danish citizen. His life is a map of European cities: Düsseldorf, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and back to Norway.

The Weight of Reality

The brushwork evolves alongside his circumstances. As the years pass, particularly after his time in Paris, his paintings grow larger. The subject matter shifts toward lighter themes, yet the foundation remains rooted in the Romantic Nationalist style and genre painting. He is a painter of scenes, capturing moments of human existence with a realistic eye.

Economic tides pull at his stability. In 1882, an economic crisis triggered by the Paris Bourse Crash forces the family business into bankruptcy. The financial strain reaches his brother, Wilhelm, leaving the artist's sister-in-law, Frida Hansen, to provide much of the family's support. Despite these pressures, the output continues through various stages of his life:

  • Confrontation (1878)
  • Wounded (1888)
  • Burial at Sea (1890)
  • Setesdalsgutt (1904)

His recognition reaches the highest levels of European nobility. King Charles IV of Sweden, impressed by his landscapes, purchases his work. Later, King Charles XV of Sweden awards him the Order of Vasa, naming him a Knight of the Royal Vasa Order.

The Final Chapter in Stavanger

The movement eventually slows. After living in Copenhagen, he returns to Norway, settling in Valle Municipality in 1896. The end comes not through sudden tragedy, but through a slow, physical decline. A diagnosis of nicotine poisoning leads to the discovery of cancer.

He returns to his birthplace, Stavanger. He spends his final months in the company of his brother, Hans. In 1907, the painter dies in a Stavanger hospital, leaving behind a body of work that bridged the gap between Norwegian roots and the grand traditions of European genre painting.
