Early Life, Family and Training
August Roosileht was born on 27 February 1887 at Kangru farm in Vajangu vald, within the Järva-Jaani parish of Järvamaa. The son of a farmer, his early years were shaped by the landscape of the Estonian countryside. His formal schooling began at the Roosna-Tammiku primary school, and he later attended the Paide town school from 1901 to 1906.
His interest in drawing led him away from the farm toward formal training. Between 1906 and 1907, he studied at the Stieglitz Art School in Saint Petersburg. This period of study was followed by a move to München, where he spent time from 1908 to 1910. He returned to Saint Petersburg to continue his education, remaining there from 1910 to 1912.
In 1920, August Roosileht married, beginning a family that would include a son and three daughters. His children, Helve and Ants, would also go on to become artists. He remained connected to the region throughout his life, eventually settling into his role as a teacher in Paide.
Professional Activity and Artistic Style
Roosileht’s hand found its primary expression through graphic art. His work is defined by a stylized manner, relying on a pure and refined line to shape his subjects. Between 1912 and 1914, he contributed caricatures to the Kilk newspaper, testing the limits of his draftsmanship through satire. This period of experimentation with form and social commentary preceded a long-standing commitment to teaching, which he began in Paide in 1919.
As his career progressed, his focus expanded beyond the printed page. From 1930 to 1940, he moved into the realms of applied arts and decorative painting, applying his precise graphic sensibility to different surfaces and functional objects. His membership in the Estonian Artists' Union marked his place within the professional community of his time, as he continued to refine his specific approach to line and composition.
Notable Works and Illustrations
His hand often turned toward the stories of the land. In 1920, he produced a series of illustrations for Kalevipoeg, working with a line that felt both precise and deliberate. This focus on narrative through graphic means continued into 1921, when he released a linocut album titled Paide. These works show a steady interest in how a single, clean stroke can define a shape or a shadow.
The themes of the epic continued to appear in his later graphic work. He produced Kalevipoeg kivi viskamas in 1930, a piece that captures a specific, heavy moment. Another notable composition from this period is Kalevipoeg Põrgu väravas. His approach remained focused on the essential form, avoiding unnecessary clutter in favor of a stylized clarity.
Later Years and Death
The final years of August Roosileht's life were marked by the shifting borders and heavy presence of war. During the German occupation, his life came to a sudden end in Paide, Estonia. He was executed on 2 August 1941 following accusations of collaboration. The circumstances surrounding his death remain tied to this period of conflict.
He died in August 1941. While the date of his execution is recorded, his final resting place remains unknown. The specific location where he was buried was never identified, leaving a physical gap in his history. His passing occurred in Paide, a town that saw much of the upheaval during those months.
