A Life Shaped by Two Shores
Armando Menocal was born into a cultivated family in Havana on July 8, 1863. His early years were rooted in the traditions of his home city, where he began his formal training at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro under Miguel Melero. At seventeen, his path took him far from Cuba to Spain, a move intended to deepen his understanding of the craft. During his decade abroad, he studied under Francisco Jover y Casanova and became acquainted with the work of Joaquín Sorolla. This period in Spain allowed him to absorb a classical Spanish style that would later inform his approach to light and form.
The peace of his studies was interrupted by the realities of history. When the Cuban War of Independence broke out, Menocal did not remain in the studio; he joined the Liberation Forces. This experience of conflict left a mark on his later subject matter. After the war concluded, he returned to the San Alejandro Academy, not as a student, but as a professor of landscape painting. His commitment to the institution grew over the decades, leading him to serve as its director in 1927 and eventually earning the title of professor emeritus in 1940.
The Language of Landscapes and History
While many of his contemporaries sought to mirror European tastes, Menocal turned his gaze toward the identity of his own nation. He became a painter of Cuban themes, focusing on national symbols, myths, and the heavy weight of history. His canvases often depicted scenes of war, including the struggles of native slaves fighting for freedom and the passing of notable generals. One of his notable works captures Christopher Columbus in chains during his return to Spain, a piece that reflects his interest in the epic nature of Cuban history.
His technical approach varied depending on the subject at hand:
- In his landscapes, he utilized an impressionistic hand and color palette, moving away from the typical Caribbean brightness toward something more grounded.
- His portraits were often executed in a classical style, featuring realistic details and dark backgrounds, such as his 1910 work, Mujer Con Blusa Rosada.
- He worked across various mediums, including oil on canvas, oil on panel, watercolor, gouache, and ink.
The legacy of his brushwork remains visible in the public spaces of Havana. His paintings decorate the walls of the Presidential Palace, the University of Havana, and the Municipal Building. Through his teaching and his art, he helped shape the direction of Cuban visual expression, leaving behind a body of work that captures both the quiet beauty of the land and the turbulent spirit of its people. He passed away in Havana on September 28, 1942.
