Early Life, Family and Training
Vienna, 4 June 1808. Anton Altmann enters a lineage defined by the brush. He is born into a family of painters, following the footsteps of his father, also named Anton, and his grandfather, Joseph. The profession is an inheritance, a matter of blood and continuity within the Austrian capital.
His education begins not in a studio, but through direct observation. He studies from nature, learning the nuances of light and terrain through the unfiltered eye. This foundational practice eventually leads him to the Academy. There, he receives formal instruction under Mössmer, refining the raw observations of his youth into the technical discipline required of a professional landscape painter.
Career and Professional Activity
The trajectory of Altmann's career shifts from the instructional to the observational. While serving as an instructor in drawing to Count Apponyi in Hungary, his focus remains on the technicalities of form. This period of teaching precedes his move to Vienna, where his professional identity solidifies. In the Austrian capital, he establishes himself as a painter of landscapes, moving beyond mere instruction to capture the physical world.
His reputation grows through a specific command of atmosphere and scale. He does not merely paint scenery; he focuses on the interplay of light and air within skyscape and mountain view paintings. His work often captures the expansive quality of panoramas, utilizing atmospherics to define the depth of the terrain. He works across various media, executing landscapes in water-colour and producing etchings from his own designs.
Notable Works and Collections
The landscape compositions of Altmann capture specific shifts in light and terrain. In 1838, he rendered the Cloister of the Convent 'Maria Schein' in Bohemia. By 1840, his focus moved to a Forest Scene. The mid-1840s saw him exploring different textures of the natural world, producing a Marshy Landscape in 1846 and an Evening Landscape in 1847. These works demonstrate a technical command over atmospheric conditions and the play of light across varied environments.
The year 1851 marks a concentrated period of production. During this time, he executed Spring In a Forest and The Mill. His output from this era also includes a Forest landscape, dated about 1851, and a Forest landscape in Lower Austria, dated about 1850. These studies of woodland environments highlight his ability to translate the specificities of the Austrian landscape into oil and watercolor. His etchings, executed from his own designs, further expand the breadth of his visual record.
