He founds the weekly magazine Knowledge in 1881, a platform that allows him to disseminate science across the English-speaking world. His output is staggering: hundreds of articles, over fifteen hundred lectures, and dozens of books including The Sun and The Universe of Stars.

Yet, this prominence comes with conflict. He frequently clashes with the established astronomical authorities of his time, such as Sir George Airy, particularly regarding the observation of the Transit of Venus. His position as an independent, entrepreneurial researcher places him at odds with government-funded institutions. This tension follows him to New York City, where he dies in 1888. He leaves behind a vast body of work that transformed astronomy from a specialized discipline into a subject of widespread public interest.
