작품 상세 설명

ESSAYS ON THE FREEDOM OF IMAGESometimes hidden, somewhere we know not where, there is a painter who has travelled the multiple paths of painting as if he expected some revelation about himself from it, about the nature of images, about the processes and methods that allow an image to be pictorial. In Pedro Casqueiro’s painting there is a feeling of the possibility of painting that seems to come from an effective belief in painting’s viability to create visual worlds, tested by Casqueiro in the countless variants that he has practiced, ranging from the most geometricising abstraction and including collages or through more clearly figurative moments. Almost everything can be crossed in his painting: maps, spaces, houses, mirrors, colour charts, plants and appropriated images. What is certain is that such a profusion of instruments, images, aesthetic tools and convocations does not build metaphors of the world, or allegories of the social; nor even allegories of painting as a genre. There is no moral in his work, nor any precept about what art or painting should or should not be, just a continued practice that is indifferent to the most emphatic discourses on the death of painting that ran through the 20th century. He thus doesn’t need to make a painting starting from photographic or videographic images; he doesn’t need to paint what we recognise – although we may recognise many images in his canvases. It is a musical painting, with the whole classic connotation that exists in this aesthetic matrix; it starts with primacies of composition, counterpoints, escapes and rebalancings. One thus understands that his painting is developed in each painting as the resolving of a specific problem, then the next one, in series that move around specific issues, to then go on to others, in each leaving ballast for the next, even when there are significant leaps in the typologies. All of these formulations contain an idea of enchantment and permanent transfiguration of painting in their processes – which are very wide nowadays. However, as a typified form, with images inside it that stand out on the surface on which they are hanging, the format of the painting, that great Renaissance inheritance, finds an enormous field of freedom in its apparent limitation.Delfim Sardo

Peter Doig: A Dreamlike Tapestry of Memory and Landscape

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1959, Peter Doig’s artistic journey is a fascinating exploration of memory, landscape, and the elusive nature of representation. His work, instantly recognizable for its hazy, atmospheric quality and evocative sense of place, has cemented his position as one of the most significant contemporary painters working today. Moving to Trinidad with his family at the age of three, and later to Canada, Doig’s childhood experiences—particularly those spent in rural settings—form a crucial foundation for his artistic vision. These early memories, often filtered through the lens of photographs, films, or even personal recollections, are then meticulously translated onto canvas, creating paintings that feel both intensely intimate and universally resonant.

Doig’s artistic development began formally in London during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He honed his skills at the Royal College of Art, absorbing influences from a diverse range of sources – including the traditions of British landscape painting alongside the burgeoning abstract expressionism of the time. However, Doig quickly developed a distinct style that defied easy categorization. His paintings are not simply depictions of scenes; they’re carefully constructed narratives imbued with a dreamlike quality. He frequently employs a technique reminiscent of old photographs—a slightly faded, almost ghostly effect—that lends his work an air of melancholy and nostalgia. This deliberate blurring of reality creates a space for the viewer to project their own memories and emotions onto the canvas.

A key element of Doig’s artistic practice is his use of source material. He rarely works directly from life, instead drawing inspiration from a wide array of sources: faded photographs, film stills, etchings, and even personal recollections. This eclectic approach allows him to synthesize disparate images into cohesive compositions that are both familiar and strangely unsettling. His landscapes—often featuring lakes, canoes, cabins, or forests—are not rendered with photographic precision but rather imbued with an emotional resonance. The figures within these scenes are frequently obscured or fragmented, further contributing to the paintings’ sense of mystery and ambiguity.

Doig's work has garnered widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. His paintings have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Tate Britain, the Centre Pompidou, and the MoMA in New York. He is included in numerous prestigious collections, demonstrating a consistent demand for his art. Notably, his works have achieved impressive prices at auction, solidifying his status as one of the most sought-after contemporary artists. His inclusion in lists such as “The Top 25 Contemporary British Figurative Painters” underscores his significant contribution to the current landscape of painting.

Beyond his technical skill and artistic vision, Peter Doig’s work possesses a profound emotional depth. He explores themes of memory, displacement, and the passage of time with remarkable sensitivity. His paintings invite viewers to contemplate their own personal histories and the ways in which they construct meaning from experience. Doig's continued exploration of these themes, combined with his distinctive visual language, ensures that he remains a vital and compelling voice within contemporary art.
